When buying your paintball gear, the most important part you need to consider is your safety equipment.  This always includes a paintball mask.  Optionally you may want to consider paintball gloves, neck protectors, and other paintball padding.   Paintball masks include both basic single lens systems and advanced thermal lens masks.  High end masks from are made by JT Paintball and include the JT Spectra goggle line, Empire which makes the Empire Events, Procaps with the V force Profiler.  Consider the amount of coverage over your face you want.  Some of these paintball masks are light weight and small, but do not cover as much of the face as the inexpensive basic goggles.  On the entry level, we always recommend the JT Goggle systems.  These goggles are always reliable and have great head coverage for the younger player wanting full head protection.

You will also need to consider which kind of paintball gun you want.  The easiest way to break down the types of paintball guns is this:  mechanical, electronic, pump, and pistol.  Within these paintball gun types, there are tournament paintball guns and scenario paintball guns. 

Tournament Paintball Guns are generally colorful guns with electronics which give them high rates of fire.  Examples of these guns include the popular Proto Rail, and the Empire Axe.

Scenario paintball guns will have a military gun look.   These guns a paintball stock, magazine, shroud, and often a paintball scope.  Popular guns in this category are the Tippmann X7 and the BT TM-15.  Both of these guns are electronic and are full auto paintball guns.

Paintball pistols include the very popular Tippmann TiPX pistol and the BT SA-17 paintball pistol.  Side arms are often used by woodsball / scenario players as a backup paintball gun.

Mechanical paintball guns are the most common.  These guns are normally semi-automatic (one shot per pull of the trigger) and the best option if you are looking for a cheap paintball gun.  Kingman makes many entry level Spyder paintball guns in this category, including the Spyder MR 1 and Spyder Sonix.  Tippmann make the Entry level scenario gun called the Tippmann Alpha Black.
